Tony Dolbel

The Jersey Canoe Club was recently asked to take custody of the paddle of a past member. The Dolbel family asked if the club could display Tony Dolbel’s wooden Kober paddle, along with a couple of photos which show Tony as we remember him.

Tony and his family were involved with the Jersey Canoe Club for many years. He will be best remembered for organising the Annual BBQ held with our sprints and cardboard canoe races. He was always supported at the BBQs by his wife Sue. In the 1980’s they traveled, a number of times, with the Club, on the annual Easter holiday to the Ardeche and Massif Central in France.

It was an honour to receive the paddle from Creighton Dolbel, who had also prepared the photos and words. Creighton has lived in Australia for over 30 years but returns to the Island regularly to visit his mum, Sue and brother Darius. It was lovely to welcome the Dolbel family to the Club’s Sunday lunch in January.

The paddle has been mounted on the wall of the Club House, at St Catherine’s, by club member, Peter Wrigglesworth. A permanent memorial to a long term member of the Club.

May Tony’s memory live on in the club, with the philosophy of creating a fun environment for all involved.

Some images of with words from Creighton. It is hard to believe that it will be 21 years in April, that he died. Such a big personality in the Club for so many years.
